It’s the question everyone gets when they start a new job or are catching up after a long time apart. My reason for being in Barcelona, as everyone knows, is for a job. I haven’t talked too much about it on here, and I’ve had many people ask how it’s going. Refresher: I’m interning with the company Cup&Cake, which has 6 different locations here in Barcelona, two cupcake shops and four brunch locations.
So….do I like my job?….
I LOVE MY JOB. I can’t put into words my excitement and happiness not only for being placed with this company but having the opportunity to meet and work alongside amazing people at each location. In just a few weeks, my coworkers have become my friends and some of the people I miss the most when I don’t see them for a week.
I started by learning the basics as a waitress/hostess in Brunch&Cake by the Sea, which is located in the VERY touristy, beachy neighborhood of Barceloneta. The tourism gave me the opportunity to meet and share my story with people from the States/Canada, other countries throughout Europe, and also to practice my Spanish with some of the locals that come in everyday. I also worked for a few weeks at another brunch location, Travel&Cake, which was so much fun. Each day brought new people and new things to learn, and my happiness has been at an all time high ever since. To only make the matter 10 times better, my coworkers were fantastic and have now all become my friends that I hang out with outside of work. It makes work and Barcelona feel that much more comfortable for me when I have friends that are here all the time!
I spent my third week shadowing the manager of all the stores, Moises(who is French!). I spent each day in a different location, starting with Cup&Cake, the very first location of the entire company, then visiting the main kitchen where a lot of the prep and all of the baked goods for the 6 locations is made(WOW at that big kitchen), and then seeing the other brunch locations too. I got to see the differences of every location and how Moises manages them, each in a unique way.
One of my favorite things I’ve learned while working with this company is how to make lattes!!! Some of my coworkers have been making sure I learn how, since I’ve always wanted to, and I really think I could be a professional barista soon…
So I work at a restaurant and you’re probably wondering about the food. Okay the food is unreal. Every person I meet from the States tells me to bring it back because they want to see it there and have it again-IT’S AMAZING. I’ve tried tons on the menu and brought my friends multiple times, only getting happier when I see the looks on their faces as the food comes out and they try it.
I may only be an intern with this company, maybe the future could hold further potential, but I am so proud to work with these amazing teams, for a wonderful boss, and in such a successful company!
